Many of the walls at Sesame Workshop, the non-profit behind Sesame Street, are big chalk boards. So it only makes sense that artists who work at Sesame Workshop turned them into huge murals of Elmo, Cookie Monster, and more. One of the artists talks about the process — and shows some more of his work — over on our blog.

Architect Vincent Callebaut designed Lilypads to be self-sufficient floating cities that can each accommodate up to 50,000 climate change refugees. Inspired by the shape of Victoria water lilies, these eco-cities would be made of polyester fibers and built around a central lagoon, and they would feature three mountains and marinas — dedicated to work, shopping and entertainment. Aquaculture farms and suspended gardens would be located below the water line, and the cities would run completely on renewable energy. Callebaut plans for his Lilypad concept to become a reality in 2100.10 innovative ideas that let us live on water

What can you accomplish in 360 hours?

The Chinese sustainable building company, Broad Group, has yet attempted another impossible feat, building a 30-story tall hotel prototype in 360 hours, after building a 15-story building in a week earlier in 2011.

You may ask why in a hurry, and is it safe? The statistics in the video can put you in good faith. Prefabricated modular buildings has many advantages over conventional buildings.

Higher precision in fabrication (+/- 0.2mm).
More coordinated on-site construction management.
Shorter construction time span.
Lower construction waste.
Also many other health and energy features are included in Broad Sustainable Buildings (BSB)

The building was built over last Christmas time and finished before New Years Eve of 2012.

The Phoenix International Media Center in Beijing by BIAD UFo.

Chinese architectural firm BIAD UFo has merged both organic forms and futuristic concepts in this new TV station office complex:
“The shape of the building recalls yet another famously stunning example of what’s been happening to Beijing’s cityscape of late, the Herzog and De Meuron “Bird’s Nest” Olympic Stadium. Here, the architects have managed to give the basket-like shape a sense of movement, reminiscent of a sea sponge or jellyfish. Digital renderings have the feel of the command bridge on a futuristic space station.”

Innovative and breathtaking urban structures like this are going up at breakneck speed all around China. In Shanghai, the new World Financial Tower has incorporated the lessons of 9/11 and is able to absorb a direct hit from a commercial airliner, with escape routes not only in the building’s core but on the exterior of the four corners, as well as “safety floors” every twelve stories which are fireproof and ventilated where building occupants would be able to await rescue. In Guangzhou, the world’s most energy-efficient office tower is shaped like a giant sail to catch wind in a set of giant turbines which generate enough electricity to power the building. And I’m not even sure what to make of structures like the one above going up in Beijing.

the future isn’t jetpacks, it’s architecture.
