Some Nickelodeon executives were worried, says Konietzko, about backing an animated action show with a female lead character. Conventional TV wisdom has it that girls will watch shows about boys, but boys won’t watch shows about girls. During test screenings, though, boys said they didn’t care that Korra was a girl. They just said she was awesome.

‘Airbender’ Creators Reclaim Their World in ‘Korra’ (via meggannn)

I don’t think some people realise that this attitude is something that is taught by society—people teach boys they shouldn’t care about anything feminine, people make them play with toys that are gendered as masculine, people berate them when they do anything feminine, society essentially tells them that anything masculine is better, then people produce literature and film and TV that reinforce this mindset. It’s obvious that. it. doesn’t. have. to. be. this. way. Sexism isn’t inherent. Literature and TV and film don’t have to reinforce this mindset—entertainment can go against the grain; if people create well-rounded characters, kids have the capacity to accept them, whether they’re male or female.

Do you also want Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris to be planets? Because if so we can talk. If not, STFU, there’s a reason that Pluto lost planet status. It is not a solar body more significant than any of those.

“According to current definitions, objects in orbit around the Sun are classed dynamically and physically into three categories: planets, dwarf planets and small Solar System bodies. A planet is any body in orbit around the Sun that has enough mass to form itself into a spherical shape and has cleared its immediate neighborhood of all smaller objects. By this definition, the Solar System has eight known planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto does not fit this definition, as it has not cleared its orbit of surrounding Kuiper belt objects.[123] A dwarf planet is a celestial body orbiting the Sun that is massive enough to be rounded by its own gravity but has not cleared its neighboring region of planetesimals and is not a satellite.[123] By this definition, the Solar System has five known dwarf planets: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris.[78] Other objects may be classified in the future as dwarf planets, such as Sedna, Orcus, and Quaoar.[124] Dwarf planets that orbit in the trans-Neptunian region are called “plutoids”.[125] The remainder of the objects in orbit around the Sun are small Solar System bodies.[123]”

NO SAILOR PLUTO WILL ALWAYS BE AWESOME
ALWAYS

How does that make internal logical sense, anyhow? The series is named for Sailor MOON. As in Earth’s Moon. As in a celestial body that’s not even a solar body and is tiny. Planet status of celestial body of association clearly doesn’t equate to power in this universe.

Leverage: The Gold Job.
Hardison is in charge of the con! and there are some excellent OT3 and Hardison-and-Sophie moments. and Hardison has yet another scarf and I like to believe brought donuts for everyone because he is considerate like that. I don’t want to talk about Nate.
BUT. Hardison says, “The game begins with an 19th century gold watch engraved with an old Cantonese inscription.” And this week’s mark says, “The lettering. I think it’s Cantonese.” And according to Sophie, the translation is, “‘When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you.’ Luke 10:8. […] It was translated into Old Cantonese.”
::facepalm:: You can’t tell from reading Chinese characters that the spoken language is Cantonese. It would be one thing if maybe the writers were making the point that they’re wrong, but I get the feeling the writers are the ones who are wrong.
Also, I have no idea if what’s on the watch is correctly inscribed/translated. Or why a bible verse would be considered an ‘Old Cantonese’ saying or even what is ‘Old Cantonese’ (especially since I think the characters are simplified Chinese??). And it looks like it’s written L-R instead of R-L (and up and down).

That doesn’t even make sense! It’s simplified and L-R and it’s all bad, very clearly an English to Chinese translation.
Also I hope they realise Chinese dialects use punctuation, too.

Watching Kindred: The Embraced with my sister reminded me once more of my love for Lillie Langtry. She’s such a vampiric bitch, but she’s so awesome at the same time. And the actress is beautiful.

Stacy Haiduk is so beautiful.
So then it’s time for SeaQuest DSV, right?

This has always been SO COOL ae;rlkj

god i love the detail that went into this show jkshdfjkshfs

Things I really, really like: the Earth Kingdom is obvs based on a lot of different cultures, but Ba Sing Se is Earth Kingdom stronghold and it is based on Qing China, when the Han Chinese were ruled by Manchu invaders. (The other famous non-Han dynasty is the Yuan dynasty, which was Mongolian.) It is also the time in which a lot of Southern Chinese kung fu styles came into prominence, among the best known: Hung Gar. (The other two great styles are Choi Lay Fut (which my brother likes) and Wing Chun (which I have a preference for).) And there’s a lot of political stuff inherent in it because the Qing dynasty is pretty much associated with its inability to stand against Western colonialism, which led to the Opium Wars and the signing away of Hong Kong. A lot of famous historical movies featuring Southern styles are set during this period or shortly after the fall of the Qing dynasty when there was a lot of civil unrest. (See: Once Upon a Time in China starring Jet Li as Wong Fei Hung (practising Hung Gar, appropriately), Ip Man starring Donnie Yen as Ip Man (Wing Chun).)

The Fire Nation, on the other hand, is based on more on TANG China, which was a golden age for China and the Han Chinese. The north of China is traditionally considered the centre of culture; the south is the province of merchants and backwater people. And it’s hard to find a more traditional style than Shaolin kung fu (‘The birthplace of kung fu’, thank you, Kung Fu Panda), especially the northern style because southern Shaolin styles were developed after the temples were burned and the Shaolin leaders scattered, largely to the south.

Bam, south/north divide, ideological divide, and visually they are SO DIFFERENT. (My brother, paraphrased: Hung Gar is too plain and Shaolin is too fancy. Which is why he likes Choi Lay Fut.)

Also, I have thoughts about how although they’re both neigong/internal styles (cultivating inner/spiritual energy, in short), Tai Chi/太极拳/taijiquan is a fist style and Ba Gua/八卦掌/baguazhang is a palm style. But I need to consult my brother about that because he knows more about the philosophical differences between them than I do.

All that commentary.
